Nothing says spooky and eerie quite like the delightfully frightening tales woven by Edgar Allan Poe. His poem, “The Raven,” is a favorite and served as the inspiration for this year’s Halloween mantle.
It all started with this little resin typewriter that I placed atop a stack of books.
An ebony bird came tapping, tapping and perched upon its keys. Perched, and sat, and nothing more.
Then I incorporated these wooden taper candle holders that I made from pieces of scrap wood. With a combination of black and silver taper candles, they give off a ghastly glow.
More Ravens came to perch along the mantle — the more the creepier! Perched, and sat, and nothing more.
A silver skeleton head subs for the bust of Pallas and complements the candle color scheme. I glued a pair of red crystal beads into the eye sockets for a sinister punch of color.
Lastly, I added a bit of signage. I found this “Haunted” sign sporting a Raven and on clearance, and so here it hangs.
While it would be more fitting if I had a sign that read, “Nevermore,” sometimes you just gotta go with what you got.
Quoth this Raven, “Beware.”
All in all, I think the old, the new, the DIY and the store-bought all came together for wickedly fun Halloween decor!
Lastly, I would be remiss to not show you our front door, inspired by another flying fiend and ready to welcome trick-or-treaters.
Do you decorate for Halloween?
What is your favorite thing about the holiday?
