Today I am featuring a birthday party that packs a serious punch! Hi-ya!
A friend’s son is taking karate classes so she threw him a ninja-themed party for his 4th birthday. No, not the green, teenage-mutant variety; the cool, shoot-poisonous-darts-and-sneak-in-and-out-undetected kind! She had so many creative decorating ideas that I had to share them with you!
For the invitation, she got the idea of a scroll from Pinterest. I designed this cute, scowling ninja figure and added Japanese kanji characters for authenticity. Printing them on parchment paper added further old-world feel. (This invitation is available for customization and purchase in the Shop.)
To assemble the scrolls:
1. Cut 1/4″ wooden dowels to size, sand the ends, and spray paint them black. The dowels should be long enough to show beyond the paper.
2. After the paint has dried, attach a bright red bead to the end of each dowel with a dab of hot glue.
3. Next, hot glue a wooden dowel to each side of the invitation. Roll each side together to meet in the center.
4. Laslty, tie the scroll closed with a thin, satin ribbon as the finishing touch.
She ordered the coolest party favors from Oriental Trading Company. Above are ninja water bottles, child chopsticks, and take-out containers that she filled with ninja stars, sticky ninja wall tumblers, ninja disc shooters and a few pieces of candy. My kids really enjoyed these treats!
She wanted to include a play ninja sword so we enlisted Sam’s help to cut and sand pieces of scrap wood into cool swords. Paint sticks would work, too, but we really liked the blade-like curve he was able to create.
We spray-painted them black and silver and glued thin, satin ribbon around the grip. Needless to say, they were a hit!
Check out these other decorations she made for the party:
I love how she turned her bay window into a Japanese shoji screen with construction paper and black crepe streamer. And do you remember making those paper lanterns in elementary school?! Such an easy decoration that adds to the overall ambience. Of course, the birthday banner and origami cranes are super cool, too!
For the grand finale… we celebrated with this awesome Rising Sun ninja cake!
She did an amazing job celebrating her little guy!
I’m so happy to have been a part of the festivities.
I hope you got some good ideas for your ninja celebration, too! — v.
