We’ve had our share of rain the last few days with the effects of Hurricane Joaquin moving through the area. On rainy days, I am usually the type who likes to hole up at home with a good book or use the day to check items off my perpetual to do list. Instead of retreating indoors due to this inclement weather, however, I took a different approach and was greatly rewarded with some beautiful and fun memories!
My soon-to-be-2-year-old daughter and I went outside to play in the rain. It was a warm fall day with a light misting of cool rain {and we weren’t out long for fear of catching a cold}. The natural light was beautiful despite the time of day, so I wrapped my Nikon DSLR camera in a towel in hopes of capturing a few choice shots of her in play. I used just one lens, my 50 mm.
She was timid at first, not entirely sure what was happening and why I wasn’t rushing her into the house and out of the rain.
We watched from afar as robins bathed in a large puddle. She squealed with delight as they shook the water off their tail feathers. She ran toward them to join in the fun, but they flew away before she arrived. Now the puddle was free for her to enjoy.
She splashed and splashed. And splashed some more.
She had a grand ol’ time prancing like a pony through puddles. And I was overjoyed to witness it all.
At one point, she walked beneath the large tree in our front yard and the branches trickled down drops of cold rain. She screeched and shivered and said, “Brrr!” but didn’t stop playing. She looked up into the sky as the rain fell down on her face.
She was alive — sensing the world around her with every fiber in her being. She was wet from head to toe. She was happy. I couldn’t be more blessed.
I am so thankful that I threw caution to the wind for a brief moment. I wish I was faster to have caught more moments on camera, but the towel was cumbersome and I honestly got caught up in the now of the moment. It was a good reminder for me; I hope it is for you, too! — v.
